Description:

Native American, Alaska, Inuit, Aleutian, or Punuk peoples, late 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive hand-made fishing spear with a wooden handle and a three-pronged tip made from walrus ivory. The serrated prongs are attached with a sinew cord. Halfway down the wooden pole is a length of fibrous cord wrapped around the shaft with a tusk hook and toggle for securing the cord, which may have acted as a line for pulling in the catch from the water. Size: 31.25" L x 1.125" W (79.4 cm x 2.9 cm)

This spear is made from a pre-Act piece of walrus ivory under the MMPA and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. We guarantee that the piece was made prior to 1972.

  • Condition: One prong is slightly loose, and lower area of sinew is loose but stable. Rich patina to wood with some age and use commensurate scuffs and abrasions. Stable fissures to ivory.
