Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba Tribe, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare Opa Osanyin herbalist's staff made of hand-forged iron. At the top of the staff is a thick ring with four highly abstract avian figures rising from it and, at its center, another abstract avian figure. Four iron rings dangle below and between the birds. The Yoruba believe that a large bird surrounded by smaller birds symbolizes the power of good over evil and the ability to control spirits and supernatural forces. As such opa osanyin physically represents this power: one large bird is typically surrounded by smaller birds at the summit of the staff. Size: 2.9" W x 17.3" H (7.4 cm x 43.9 cm); 18.2" H (46.2 cm) on included custom stand.
