Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Chamba, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved anthropomorphic Chamba figure (also Camba, Tshamba, Waschamba) with a columnar body, a crested head, and stylized features and limbs. The arms are in low relief against the cylindrical body, resting just above the waist, and the head has a simplistic and slightly raised visage under a domed coiffure. Chamba figures are rare, and their purpose is not fully understood. One type is believed to serve as a medium for communication with the spirit world. Petite figures have been used to cure snake bites or protect one from snake bites; traditionally, these were attached to iron spikes that were inserted in the earth. This example has a wonderful weathered and aged surface with a dark patina. Size: 2.5" W x 13.5" H (6.4 cm x 34.3 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
