Description:

Africa, ca. 19th century CE. A forged-steel decorative sword from Africa in the unmistakable style of a Roman gladius. The elongated triangular steel blade has a pair of slender grooves running down the midsection and is attached at the tang to a sturdy wooden handle. The leather-wrapped wooden sheath terminates in a balustrade-style tip and is reinforced with a thick iron strap and loop near the opening. Size (sword): 2.75" W x 26.625" H (7 cm x 67.6 cm); size (blade): 17.625 (44.8 cm).

Provenance: private Hytken collection, Carlsbad, California, USA, found in Israel in the early 1970s

  • Condition: Light bending and oxidation to blade, with some separation to scabbard halves, small losses to leather wrappings, and light desiccation. Light earthen deposits along scabbard and nice, lustrous patina to wooden elements.
