Central Africa, Cameroon / Gabon / Equatorial Guinea, Fang people (also Fan or Pahouin), ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A pretty brass neck ring or collar of torque form featuring a lateral crest and adorned with geometric decoration typical of the region. Solid-cast rather than forged, neck rings like this were traditionally worn by Fang women and would be applied via the help of a metalsmith. These adornments were only removed after death. Made of a large amount of valuable copper alloy, they represent a conspicuous display of stored wealth. Size of exterior: 5.9" L x 5.5" W (15 cm x 14 cm); 4.3" H (10.9 cm) on included custom stand; of interior: 4.3" L x 3.9" W (10.9 cm x 9.9 cm); width of band: 1.4" W (3.6 cm)
