Description:

West Africa, Mali or Burkina Faso, Dogon culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved ancestor or Tellem figure made from a warm red-brown sandstone in a stylized crouching position. The slender man sits with knees drawn up under his elongated head, accentuated by a long beard and exaggerated facial features. Sculpted out of a rough stone, the features are somewhat softened by surface weathering and mineral deposits, perhaps from burial and exposure to the elements. Size: 4" L x 1.5" W x 6.5" H (10.2 cm x 3.8 cm x 16.5 cm)
