West Africa, Mali, Dogon culture, ca. late 19th to mid- 20th century CE. A pair of cast brass figures of a man and woman, in a seated position and holding beverage cups in their hands. The woman kneels with the cup held at her waist, and her torso is nude, with a prominent belly button, elongated breasts, and linear scarification or tattoo marks. The man is bearded and wears a waist cloth and necklace. Dogon figures are used in religious ceremonies and sacrifice, serving as magical items that demonstrated the great skill of the blacksmith, a figure that wielded prestige in Dogon society Size: 1.5" L x 1" W x 4.4" H (3.8 cm x 2.5 cm x 11.2 cm)
