West Africa, Mali, Djenne peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An elegant pottery vessel boasting a fascinating form with a round yet stable base, a bulbous body, a carinated shoulder, and a conical spout surmounted by a gently flared rim. Nicely burnished, the red-slipped surface of the jar has been decoratively incised with horizontal bands and vertical and diagonal striations formed from multitudes of petite dashed lines. Size: 7.9" Diameter x 12.6" H (20.1 cm x 32 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
