Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE; mid-20th century CE. A fine pair of Russian Orthodox traveling icons: a mid-20th-century wooden icon painted the bust of Jesus in tempera on gesso and the other a 19th-century brass diptych that opens to 2 wooden panels of 4 saints. The exterior of the diptych is elaborately adorned with relief rosettes in the corners, a central tondo of Mary and Jesus, decorative glass beads, and liberal remains of woven textile. The brass chain extending from the top would have allowed it to be easily carried and the latch at the side would hold the diptych closed. Size of larger (diptych when open): 8.9" W x 5.5" H (22.6 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
