Grett Friedman (American, 20th c). "Mobius Strip" copper sculpture, 1998. Signed "G.F." and dated 1998 at a lower edge of the mobius strip. An elegant, free-standing copper sculpture representing a Mobius strip by artist Grett Friedman. A Mobius strip is "a surface with one continuous side formed by joining the ends of a rectangular strip after twisting one end through 180 degrees" (Oxford Languages). Friedman beautifully captures the sinuous twists and turns of this loop, which is perched upon a pyramidal base. The smooth surface presents with an attractive blue-green patina. The design of the Mobius Strip symbolizes unity and non duality, as the two sides - referred to as inside and outside - are joined and become one side. The Mobius strip was discovered by German mathematicians Johanne Benedict Listing and August Mobius in 1858, and this one-sided, non-orientable strip has fascinated artists, mathematicians, and engineers ever since. Grett Friedman earned her degree in Fine and Applied Art from Skidmore College and studied privately with sculptor Max Kalish (1891-1945). In addition, Friedman completed post-graduate study in sculpture and ceramics at the Cleveland Institute with honors. Friedman is a founding member of the Santa Fe Society of Artists as well as a member of the New Mexico Potters' Association and the New Mexico Sculptors' Guild. The following is her artist's statement: "There is no mystical, hidden meaning in my work. I leave the interpretation to the viewer. I have a direction in mind but I let the material tell me what to do. I like that spontaneity."

- Condition: Sculpture is in overall excellent condition. It is signed "G.F." and dated 1998 at a lower edge of the mobius strip. The copper alloy has developed a lovely blue-green patina over time.
