Native American, Southwest, northeastern Arizona, Hopi, ca. 1984 CE. Signed "AHOLA / CHIEF KACHINA / L. MACKTINA Jr. / 84" on underside of base. A fine wooden Ahola Kachina doll hand-painted in vibrant pigments and elaborately adorned with a plumed headdress, an animal hide cape, a string armband, a green synthetic fur collar, and a pipe cleaner in his left hand. The Ahola is a Hopi Chief Kachina of a high status. Regarded as an elder possessing enormous wisdom, the Ahola participates in the Bean Dance (Powamuya) ceremony to open the Kachina season. Size: 4.9" W x 9.5" H (12.4 cm x 24.1 cm)
