Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Oaxaca, ca. 1970. Signed "Autor Manuel Jimenez, Angelico Jimenez, Isaias Jimenez". This lively wooden dog (perro in Spanish) was hand-carved and hand painted by Manuel Jimenez Ramirez (Mexican, 1919-2005), a 20th century artist credited with originating the Oaxacan version of alebrijes, and family members Angelico and Isaias Jimenez. Alebrijes are in essence animal figures hand-carved from wood and then hand-painted with lively patterns in contrasting bold hues. This example, depicting an expressive puppy, is a characteristically colorful alebrije - with a black spotted yellow body, sky blue eyes and matching toe nails, and a pink mouth and tongue. One can find Jimenez' creations in both private collections and public institutions throughout the world. Size: 13.25" W x 9.5" H (33.7 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired prior to 1990
