Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser (Austrian, 1928-2000). "Dreiaugiger Gruner Buddha Mit Hut / Three-Eyed Green Buddha with Hat" offset lithograph, ca. 1970s. A foil-embossed colorful print of Friedensreich Hundertwasser's transautomatist piece entitled "Three-Eyed Green Buddha with Hat" (created by the artist in 1963). Hundertwasser's art and architecture embraced organic motifs and vibrant coloration as we see in this example. His artistic inspirations included Vienna Secessionists Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) and Egon Schiele (1890-1918). In addition, his architecture, with its liberal use of colorful tiles biomorphic forms, has been compared to that of Catalan modernist Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926). Size of sight view: 20.625" L x 24.875" W (52.4 cm x 63.2 cm) Size of frame: 28" L x 32.25" W (71.1 cm x 81.9 cm)

As a youth, Hundertwasser and his mother (who were Jewish) escaped Nazi persecution by passing for Christian. Hundertwasser went so far as to join the Hitler Youth in order to be inconspicuous. After World War II he decided to pursue visual art and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In addition to fine art, Hundertwasser pursued architecture and applied art. He enjoyed living and working close to nature, and worked to protect the environment. Interestingly, the name Hundertwasser has a double meaning - "Peace-realm" or "Peace-rich" - hence, Friedensreich Hundertwasser literally translates as "Peace-Realm Hundred-Water". He also chose two other names for himself, Regentag and Dunkelbunt, which translate as "Rainy day" and "Darkly multi-colored" in English.
