Northern Europe, England, ca. 1969 CE. Verso is stamped with the Wedgewood Collectors Society logo and inscribed "WEDGWOOD / MADE IN / ENGLAND / 69." A fine, black jasperware medallion produced by the Wedgwood Collectors Society known as the "anti-slavery medallion." Originally produced and distributed in 1787 as a seal for the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, the ovoid medallion depicts a Black man kneeling in chains and raising his hands to the heavens in supplication. Inscribed around the figure is the phrase "Am I not a man and a brother?" This example was released as a limited-edition plaque offered to the members of the Wedgwood Collectors Society in 1969. Size (medal): 3.1" W x 4" H (7.9 cm x 10.2 cm); (Wedgwood box): 4.6" W x 4.6" H (11.7 cm x 11.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
