Description:

Rose & Erni Cabat (American, XX). Glazed pottery, ca. 1965. When I first saw this I had no clue who the maker was, but I knew it was special. My mind went to Newcomb College or one of the early 20th century potters, but upon further research discovered its origins. Made by Rose Cabat and her husband Erni, this was part of the "mid-century" movement (MCM), perfected by the Cabat Studio in Tucson, Arizona. Large ovoid jar in dark brown clay upon which the most luscious, thick glazes have been applied. Swirled shades of green and drips and more swirls of dark yellow adorn the piece giving it such amazing texture and movement. One of the most visually intriguing and tactile-pleasing vessels from this time period that I have had the pleasure of handling! Signed on base "Cabat" and accompanied with studio gift card. Size: 6.5" W x 9.5" H (16.5 cm x 24.1 cm)

Rose Cabat was an American studio ceramicist, classified as part of the mid-century modern movement who was best known for her innovative glazes upon small porcelain pots called 'feelies,' often in the shape of onions, figs, and bowls. At 100 years of age she was the oldest known actively practicing pottery artist in the United States until her death in 2015.
