Description:

ORIGINALLY OFFERED AT $125

Indonesia, Bali, ca. 1960 CE. A finely carved and finished Patih Demung mask used in a dramatic form of dance in Indonesia in which performers interpret traditional myths and stories about heroes and kings, all accompanied by gamelan music. Such masks (topeng) are related to the cult of the ancestors, and the dancers are understood to be interpreters of the gods. This example is quite dramatic in its expression, carved in both high and low relief making for a dynamic surface, and elaborately decorated not only with polychrome hues but hair and shell-enameled teeth to boot! Size: 7.6" W x 6.5" H (19.3 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, CA.
