Description:

Native American, Southwest, Hopi, ca. 1960 CE. A fine Tasaf or Tasapkatsina (the term used in the Hopi Dictionary), the Navajo Kachina, among the Hopi's visual interpretations of their neighbors, the Navajos. This popular kachina form may represent a figure from the Niman (Home Dance), the Powamu (Bean Dance), or the Buffalo Dance. The Tasaf's stamping dance is intermittently interrupted by various turns and calls. As is characteristic of the Tasaf Kachina Dancer, its abstract visage presents a yellow, beaklike form and stylized black painted facial features against a pale green ground. There is a tuft of red 'hair' (yarn) for one ear and a tuft of bird feathers for the other ear. Additional feathers adorn the top of the head. Body paint in red, pink, white, and yellow adorns the torso, and the garment covering the lower body features attached painted, wood tail-like forms. The doll holds a bow comprised of wood, black yarn, and feathers. Size: 13.25" H (33.7 cm)
