Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, (Dine) Navajo, ca. 1959 CE. A handwoven wool textile "sampler," the main wool wefts are woven over cotton warps, and the warps form the fringe along one edge. Samplers were made by weavers as swatches for the patterning and colors before committing to a full-length project, and these smaller weavings were popular purchases amongst tourists who wanted a portable souvenir. Included is a tag from the original shop that sold this sampler- the artist's name is faded, but possibly the surname "Yazzie" with the location of "Red Rock," and the year "1959". Size: 11.5" L x 11.5" W (29.2 cm x 29.2 cm)
