Description:

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). (1) "La Femme aux Epis (Woman with Ears of Wheat)" and (2) "Woman with a Dove" ceramic plates, 1950. Both are facsimile signed on verso with Limoges stamp. A lovely pair of ceramic plates made by the Limoges Factory with designs after Pablo Picasso, each presenting fineline, black on white drawings of a female face and a dove. The first is titled "La Femme aux Epis (Woman with Ears of Wheat)" and features a minimalist design of a feminine visage enveloped by wheat stalks and meandering floral vines that are carried in the beak of the dove at her right. Similarly, "Woman with a Dove" portrays the head of a woman with one hand raised to support a perched dove. Though the dove was already a biblical symbol of peace, Picasso's dove drawings - 'swift and elegant, it is a flight of a drawing in itself' (Laura Cumming, The Observer) - became the quintessential image for the peace movement during the Cold War. Size (both the same): 9.5" Diameter (24.1 cm)

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish world-famous artist who had a brilliant artistic career and spent most part of his life in France. His cubist paintings were very popular, but he also was a prolific draughtsman with a minimalist style. His drawings in black and white, with sharp lines depicting poetic faces, delicate animals or flowers.

Pablo Picasso painted his first dove when he was learning to paint from his father, Jose Ruiz y Blasco. But the dove also held political significance for the artist. The image refers to Picasso's joining of the Communist Party and involvement with the World Peace Congresses, following the Second World War. His painting "La Columbe (The Dove)" became the symbol of the Congresses and was used for the poster of the 1949 Paris meeting.
