Description:

United States, ca. 1942 /1941 CE. An extremely fine Mercury dime professionally slabbed by ANACS (American Numismatic Association Certification Service), certification #: 6183137. The 1942/41 Mercury Dime is considered a special and rare variety because of a minting error that occurred during the production process, the US Mint accidentally used a die from the previous year, 1941, to produce some of the 1942 dimes. As a result, some of the 1942 Mercury Dimes display a noticeable overdate error where the "1" from the previous year is still partially visible beneath the "2". The official name of this 10-cent denomination is the Winged Liberty Head dime, but it is commonly known as the Mercury dime due to the depiction of Liberty on the obverse wearing a winged cap, often mistaken for the Roman god Mercury's headgear. This design was minted in the United States from 1916 to 1945 and is considerably more attractive and valuable than later mints. Size: 0.7" Diameter (1.8 cm)
