Lot 27A
**Originally Listed At $500**
Native American, Western United States, Dakota (Sioux), ca. 1920s to 1940s CE. A leather mother doll and baby, with beaded features with glass seed beads. The head is covered in yarn hair and the face is inlaid with black glass eyes that add a lifelike quality to the doll. The baby is hidden but secure inside a cradle board worn by a strap around the mother's neck. Take note of the resemblances between this doll and those accredited to Rebecca Blue Cloud (1883-1944) in the Spurlock Museum collection. Blue Clouds dolls stood out amongst other dolls from this period for their distinctive features such as inset black faceted-glass bead eyes, triangular noses, and featuring an attached panel on the front of the shirt, and a unique beadwork and fringe. The presence of these characteristics in this doll strongly indicate it was made by Rebecca Blue Cloud. Size: 13" L x 6" W (33 cm x 15.2 cm); 13.5" H (34.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Compare to 2 dolls in the Spurlock Museum collection, collection numbers 2009.08.0001A & 2009.08.0001B. Rebecca Blue Cloud (1883-1944) was the granddaughter of Taoyateduta / Chief Little Crow of the Upper Sioux in Granite Falls, Minnesota. She crafted dolls for the tourist market during the 1920s to the early 1940s.
