Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Haida peoples, ca. 1940s CE. A fantastic club finely carved from alder wood, with a squid wrapped around a zoomorphic creature. The squid's body forms the handle of the club, its tentacles finely incised along the length of the midsection. The club end has an incised face, with large narrow eyes, bared teeth, and small nostrils, perhaps a stylized rendering of a sea mammal like a seal. Clubs were widely used by fishermen to stun or quickly kill prey that might risk capsizing the boat. This is a lovely example of the hand-held hunting tool, and has developed a smooth patina from touch and use! Size: 16.75" L x 1.5" W (42.5 cm x 3.8 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
