Description:

Oceania, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 1940s CE. An impressive hand-carved wooden club with shark teeth serving as the serrated edge. The thick handle extends to the machete shaped paddle that has a hand carved slot along the edge and drilled perforations for attaching teeth. The fourteen serrated teeth are drilled on the tips of the roots and a fibrous palm frond is woven through the teeth and the wooden body. Clubs and swords were lined with shark teeth from a variety of species and were used for ceremonial combat to maintain honor or duels. Using a fierce predator from the sea as part of the weapon would imbue the user with power, and sharks were worshipped as deities. This exciting weapon displays the indigenous' reverence for the sea with this clever design! Size: 16.125" L x 3" W (41 cm x 7.6 cm)
