Description:

Western Europe, Switzerland, Brienz, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A charming wooden jar of a St. Bernard dog coming out from a barrel with inlaid glass eyes. The barrel base is stamped "Gd. St. Bernard" for the Great St. Bernard Pass. The St. Bernard dog breed is recognized for historic alpine rescues of travelers trapped by avalanches and snow on the treacherous pass. These dogs had a miniature barrel cask of brandy or wine attached to their collars to revive and warm the people they found. Black Forest wood carvings are a traditional cottage craft made famous for their whimsical depictions of animals. While most assume these pieces some from the Bavarian regions of Germany, they originated in Brienz, Switzerland, an area known for its timber industry and stunning scenery that drew in many visitors who desired souvenirs. Size: 5" Diameter x 11.75" H (12.7 cm x 29.8 cm)
