Native American, Southeastern United States, North Carolina, Cherokee, ca. 1930s CE. A handwoven basketry dish made of pine needles, utilizing a coiling technique to create layers of twisted needle bundles held together with wrapped and stitched raffia. Pine needle basketry is a traditional craft of the Cherokee people, dating back centuries. This method and material were then learned and used by enslaved people on plantations in the region, and during the American Civil War era, this type of weaving became a practical skill also among the white women when resources were scarce.
