Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

Europe, France, ca. 1930s to 40s CE. A piece of Tramp Art depicting Christ of the Cross with elements of the Passion, all upon a decorative pedestal - the cross and pedestal comprised of carved wood painted in red and gold tones and the Christ figure, chains, and "INRI" banner comprised of golden hued metal. Tramp art was popular from the 1870s to 1940s - folk artists utilized discarded pieces of wood, such as cigar boxes or shipping crates and carved them with simple tools like pocketknives - whittling geometric pieces with notched edges and layering them - a technique also known as a Crown of Thorns which is quite apropos here, given that this piece presents Christ on the Cross. Pieces like this one are a powerful reminder that "art" is not just created by professional artists, but also by anyone of any age or socioeconomic status with a creative mind. Size: 15" H (38.1 cm)
