Description:

North America, United States, ca. early 20th century CE. "Cram's Unrivaled Terrestrial Globe - 12 Inch," composed of lithographic printed gores (segments) featuring silver-painted oceans over papier-mache and plaster hemispheres, with currents and trade wind patterns. The legend and scale are located just south of Australia. The natural scale is detailed and accurate. Mounted on an iron full meridian ring with raised latitude coordinates, the globe spins on its axis but does not tilt. This example was produced by the George F. Cram Company. After the company moved its headquarters to Indianapolis in the 1920s, it began producing globes. The silver-painted style was challenging to maintain, resulting in a limited production run over a few years. Geopolitical identifiers on this globe - such as colonial names, borders, and other features - suggest a manufacturing date around 1936. A close examination of the Horn of Africa illustrates the shifting geopolitical landscape of the era, reflecting the influences of World War II. Size: 13" Diameter x 16" H (33 cm x 40.6 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
