Description:

Mexico, ca. 1925 CE. A hand carved figure of Jesus Christ in the crucifixion position, painted in many colors for a striking finish. The sculpture brilliantly captures the drama and sorrow of the tragic crucifixion in graphic detail, with blood dripping over the body and stigmata through hands and feet. The visage is painted with expressive detail, particularly in the eyes. A poignant folk art tradition that inherits style and iconography from the Spanish Colonial era. Size: 13" x 10"

A bit of art historical and theological context - This example recalls the realism that emerged in 17th century Spanish religious sculptures and paintings. Such realism was purposefully sought in order to combat Protestantism and revitalize the Catholic Church. Artists aimed to create vivid and naturalistic imagery that was at the same time dramatically emotive, soulful, and gruesomely graphic. The sculptors' stylings paralleled those of painters Diego Velazquez and Francisco de Zurburan. Provenance: Ex-Historia Gallery, Santa Monica, CA.
