Description:

North America, United States, ca. 1920s CE. A distinctive wooden umbrella stand, boasting traditional tramp art characteristics of a geometric form constructed with nails and adhesive and embellished with chip and notch carved decoration. A tiered foot supports the hexagonal prism-shaped body, which culminates in a flared neck and square rim. The exterior is elaborately incised with linear motifs forming jagged peripheries and a richly textured surface, and then hand-painted in hues of chocolate brown and caramel. Popular from the 1870s to 1940s, tramp art utilized discarded pieces of wood, such as cigar boxes or shipping crates and carved them with simple tools like pocketknives. Pieces like these are a powerful reminder that "art" is not just something created by a professional, but that anyone of any age or socioeconomic status can create something of aesthetic value.
