Latin America, Mexico, 1918 CE. A very early, Mexican ex-voto, painted on heavy gauge tin. The text is legible in part and appears to commemorate an event that occurred on October 12, 1918 when unfortunately a loved one became gravely ill. The family prayed to the Senor de la Clemencia (Christ of Clemency) for a miracle, and in a few days changes for the better came to be. The touching image includes a kneeling male praying before and presenting a lit candle to a crucified Christ. A wonderful and quite early example of the ex voto tradition. Size: 7.25" W x 5.5" H (18.4 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private New York city collection
