Description:

Edgar Degas (French 1834-1917), Etude de Tete, printed in Paris in 1918 by Henri Floury (French, 1862-1961) for Paul Lafond's Catalogue Raisonne. A very nice impression - a poichoir (after the drawing) on wove paper, from a deluxe edition of 60 that was issued only one year after Degas passed away. This study sheet by Degas features a helmeted head of an ancient Greek warrior in profile, several other smaller heads in profile also after ancient sources of inspiration to the upper right and lower left, a grazing horse to the upper left (oriented to the left margin), and classical scene to the lower right. Size: 9.75" L x 7.625" W (24.8 cm x 19.4 cm)

Born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas (July 19, 1834 - September 27, 1917), Edgar Degas is perhaps one of the most famous French artists, known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings - with more than half of his oeuvre depicting ballet dancers. Although many claim that Degas was one of the founders of Impressionism, he actually rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist artist. Degas was an expert draftsman, quite adept at capturing motion in his drawings of dancers and horses. In addition, his portraits probed the complex psychological inner worlds of humanity. Early on in his career, Degas aspired to be a history painter, and this piece demonstrates that his rigorous academic training and intense study of classic art had prepared him for this pursuit. However, by the time Degas was in his early thirties, he changed his direction, and became one of the most progressive painters of modern life.
