Description:

Latin America, Mexico, March 8, 1916 CE. A touching antique Mexican ex-voto created to ask for a miraculous cure of an infant named Modesto Bello who had a vision illness, perhaps blindness, painted in oil on tin. To the right, the scene depicts the baby staring directly ahead as he sits upon a bed/crib with both hands raised. In the center, a gentleman, most likely the boy's father kneels in a prayerful gesture offering a lit candle to an image of el Senor de Tecalpulco. The painting style shows a blend of folk art influences as well as more academic painting - note the use of linear perspective and attempts at modeling the figures. Size: 12-1/4" x 8-7/16"

The text translates, "The five month old child, Modesto Bello, was gravely ill with a vision problem and feeling desparate for a cure, his parents implored Senor de Tecapulco to bring him to a healthy state and in gratitude they dedicate the present - Yguala - March 8, 1916".
