Description:

Latin America, Mexico, dated 1910 CE. A hand-painted heavy gauge tin retablo depicting Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (Venice 1569 - 1591, Rome; canonized 1726) - the patron saint of Roman Catholic youth - his 3/4 length portrait in a painted oval surround. San Alysius Gonzaga wears a white billowing garment with a lace collar over his black habit and gazes at a crucifix with flowers of lilies sprouted from the cross that symbolize the character of virginity. Son of Ferrante, marchese di Castiglione, Aloysius had a privileged upbringing - educated at the ducal courts of Florence and Mantua as well as at the royal court of Madrid, where he became the page to King Philip II’s son Diego. In 1585, at the age of 16, he denied his inheritance and entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in Rome. Sadly, shortly before his ordination, while nursing victims of the plague, Gonzaga contracted the disease himself and passed away. Size: 16" L x 12.375" W (40.6 cm x 31.4 cm)
