Native American, Northwestern United States, Columbia River Plateau region, Nez Perce, ca. early 20th century CE. A large cornhusk bag finely woven or twined from hemp / cotton cords and embroidered with cornhusks dyed in contrasting colors. The natural and dyed cornhusks are false embroidered over the surface into geometric patterns. Bags woven from cornhusk and native hemp were sought after trade items in the Plateau trade network, and as time went on, these bags were created more ornately using many materials but often still retaining brightly colored embroidery made from cornhusk. Yakima tribes made similar bags but are nearly indistinguishable and often just referred or categorized as Nez Perce. Size: 17" L x 14.5" W (43.2 cm x 36.8 cm)
