Description:

South Asia, India / Burma border, Nagaland, Naga people, ca. early 1900s CE. A superb traditional Naga glass seed bead necklace with 44 strands of cotton threads strung primarily with White Heart beads and a chank shell button clasp. The red trade beads are a type known as "White Heart" or "Cornaline D'aleppo," formed by two layers - an inner white core and outer red coating. These beads were likely acquired through trade from Europe and India, date from the late 1800s to 1900s. During the time that this necklace was made, the Naga still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. During the great ritual occasions in their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including a necklace like this one. Still wearable and in excellent museum-quality condition! Size of strand: 46" L (116.8 cm); shell button: 1.5" Diameter (3.8 cm)
