Description:

Western Europe, Venice, Italy, ca. 18th and 19th century CE. A collection of dozens of Venetian trade beads including three large, colorful millefiori and single-color Hudson Bay green hearts, Bohemian blue cobalts, and tile beads, all forms of trade beads, strung and ready to wear. Trade beads played a major role in the age of European exploration and colonization, serving as currency on multiple continents. Length of necklace: 26" L (66 cm); largest millefiori bead: 1.2" W (3 cm)

The millefiori technique uses multicolored glass rods cut into cross section to create their distinctive patterns. Chevron beads - also called star or rosetta beads - were created in Venice and Murano, Italy toward the end of the 14th century. They are drawn beads made from glass canes shaved via star molds and consist of layers of alternating colors.
