Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th century CE. A hand-carved printing block with six finely carved columns of Tibetan script, used for sutra printing (printing prayers) on paper for prayer wheels. Recently China has sought world heritage status for one of Tibet's best known sutra printing houses - the Dege Sutra Printing House in Dege County built in 1729 and now part of China’s Sichuan Province - as a sign of respect for Tibetan culture. The Dege Sutra Printing House is known for its breathtaking frescoes, sculptures, Tibetan style edifices, as well as its woodcut printing plates like this example. A wonderful piece with gorgeous patina. Size: 16.125" W x 3.125" H (41 cm x 7.9 cm)
