Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th century CE. A magnificent silver and bronze ghau (gau, ghau), a large prayer box. The shape of the box mirrors that of traditional central Asian roofs inspired by the domes and arches of Persian architecture. The face of the box, made of silver, has an intricate and auspicious cast motif of lotus flowers, lions, and a central dragon. The brass sides and back are undecorated aside from two riveted handles that project from either side. Inset into the front of the box, behind a glass panel, is a painting on parchment of the dancing, blue-skinned god Vishnu. Covered in a brown textile case. Size: 3.9" W x 5.75" H (9.9 cm x 14.6 cm)
