Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th century CE. A beautiful hand-made cardstock and textile crown known as a ringa, worn by Buddhist monks or lamas with painted details. The five panels are held together by two strips of cloth running around the bottom and the center backside. The panels are decorated with embossed images of Bodhisattvas seated on lotus pedestals with swirling motifs around them, and the details are painted in yellow, red, and blue pigments. The versos are painted red with a yellow character in the center of each panel. These crowns were worn on top of hats by Buddhist monks during ceremonies or ritual performances, and the panels were sometimes painted by the monk as part of a meditative practice. Size: 10" W x 7" H (25.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
