Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th century CE. A finely cast copper alloy statue of Maitreya, also known as Byams-pa or the "Earthly Buddha" - a bodhisattva who is said to be the future Buddha. The deity is seated in European style, as is characteristic of Maitreya, on a high throne, and his visage presents with serene facial details, long stretched earlobes, and a curly coiffure topped by an ushnisha. Maitreya is thought to be a bodhisattva who resides in the Tushita heaven, but will one day descend to earth in order to preach the Buddhist dharma (law) again, after Gautama Buddha's teachings have been denounced.   • Condition: Some surface wear with abrasion to curls above forehead and small loss to tip of nose. One inch section of openwork on base reattached with minute losses in that area. Minor casting flaw to lotus on back of throne. Unsealed. Bronze has developed a rich age patina.
