Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. Rattanakosin period, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A beautiful standing Buddha statue cast from bronze and gilt in lustrous gold wash, upon a tiered pedestal with his hands held up and open in the Abhaya Mudra gesture. He wears lavish royal attire with floral embellishments that resemble silk brocade, and the characteristic flame-ushnisha atop his head. A tall and elegant example with a calming energy directed from his hands, the Abhaya Mudra is also known as "Gesture of Fearlessness" that dispels fear and promotes peace and tranquility. The floral print of his robes is cast in low relief adding wonderful texture to his garments and added sense of decadent silk brocade / embroidery. The Rattanakosin artists continued working in the earlier Ayutthaya style to recapture the past grandeur of the royal court and as they rebuilt the new kingdom. Size: 6" L x 5" W x 21" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm x 53.3 cm)

After the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767 by the Burmese, and the turmoil during the early years of the Rattanakosin’s establishment, King Rama I restored many aspects of the old capital city to the new capital of Rattanakosin (Bangkok), even shipping Ayutthaya palace bricks to the new city. This Buddha was certainly part of this regeneration, conveying the wealth and power of a past era being carried over into the new.
