Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ayutthaya Period, ca. 18th century CE. A gorgeous and sensitive example of a Buddha head cast from bronze. The face is wonderfully expressive, with downcast eyes, a flaring nose, and full lips; the ears are also highly detailed, as is the hair, which is styled in a distinctive curl pattern, with a prominent flame ushnisha. The clear brow line and demarcated border around the hair are characteristics of depictions of the Buddha from the Ayutthaya period. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4.2" L x 3.3" W x 7.3" H (10.7 cm x 8.4 cm x 18.5 cm); height on stand: 10.2" (25.9 cm)

The use of curved lines and the spiral curls for the hair reflect the influence of the Gupta style from India. Ayutthaya Thailand practiced Theravada Buddhism and much of their sculptural art focused on representations of the Buddha.
