Description:

United States, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A portraiture bust of a man with a serious countenance that is hand-carved from stone, perhaps marble, done relatively naturalistically, without idealizing any of his features. The bust rests on a flat base, with the top portion of the shoulders visible, revealing a stiff collar. The face is that of an older gentleman, with incised lines to create deep wrinkles and a furrowed brow. The coiffure is pulled back to reveal a large brow, and may have been a wig. It is possible that this bust represents George Washington, the first president of the United States who was well known for his dour expressions and lack of charm. Size: 7" L x 5.5" W x 11" H (17.8 cm x 14 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
