Description:

New World, Spanish Colonial, found in a shipwreck off the Florida coast, sunk ca. 1715 and recovered in 1964 CE. A collection of four silver pieces of eight and one gold doubloon. These are displayed in a modern custom frame with an explanatory document and red wax seal. The 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet is infamous because, seven days after departing Havana, on July 31, 1715, eleven of the twelve ships were lost in a hurricane off the coast of modern day Vero Beach, Florida. Around 1500 sailors perished in the tragedy and the sunken ships became an instant and enduring source of privateering, piracy, and treasure hunting.
