Description:

Latin America, Spanish Colonial, probably Mexico, ca. 18th to early 19th century CA. A dramatic wooden sculpture of Christ depicted during the Crucifixion with a sorrowful, downcast visage framed by a long brown coiffure and beard as his arms spread out nearly as wide as he is tall. Liberal remains of blood droplets cascade down his lengthy, emaciated torso, while a gray-blue cloth covers his groin. This example was created when Mexico was referred to as New Spain and the Catholic Church's missionary work was expanding northward into the Southwest region of the United States. Such sculptures were intended for churches, but were also paraded through towns during Holy Week. Wooden pegs in hands and feet are removable. Size: 34.4" W x 35" H (87.4 cm x 88.9 cm)

Now for a bit of art historical and theological context - This example recalls the realism that emerged in 17th century Spanish religious sculptures and paintings. Such realism was purposefully sought in order to combat Protestantism and revitalize the Catholic Church. Artists aimed to create vivid and naturalistic imagery that was at the same time dramatically emotive, soulful, and gruesomely graphic. The sculptors' stylings paralleled those of painters Diego Velazquez and Francisco de Zurburan.

Please note that the pigment on this sculpture contains up to 4% arsenic in areas.
