Description:

Latin America, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 1750 CE. Two hand carved wood and polychromed cherubic figures depicting rosy-cheeked, wide-eyed angels that very much reflect the stylings of the Baroque to Rococo periods with their sensuous fleshy forms that gesture and seem to be fluttering (one with separately carved and attached gilded wings) in dance-like motions - as if they were angels emerging from a Peter Paul Rubens masterpiece - one signed "Enrique Alianz (?) Vega" on the back. These angels display intense emotion without restraint, representing the artistic production of an era that was all about drama, even (or especially) when depicting religious subjects. Size: winged angel measures 14.25" W x 19.625" H (36.2 cm x 49.8 cm)

Provenance: private Brustin Collection, California, USA
