Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North America, probably Mexico, Spanish Colonial period, ca. second half of the 18th to early 19th century CE. A hefty and finely preserved example of a signal cannon that is cast from brass via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique. The signal cannon has a broad base, a tapered body with a petite fuse hole along the bottom, three integral astragals around the cylindrical barrel for structural support, and a tall handle along one side. Known colloquially as a 'thunder mug' due to its resemblance to a drinking tankard, these signal cannons would be filled with black powder and lit while resting on the ground to create a sonorous explosion. Thunder mugs like this example originated as a type of test cannon for manufacturers of black powder to experiment with different formulas. Size: 4.625" W x 5.1" H (11.7 cm x 13 cm)
