Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. Finely delineated in egg tempera and gold leaf on wood, a very tall icon depicting the Ascension of Christ - the appearance of Christ to the apostles after his Resurrection when he was taken up to heaven in a billowing cloud. This icon displays the joy of the Creator's ascension to heaven. The apostles represent all of humankind, their center being the Mother of God who is depicted in her traditional red and blue robes. Mary is placed in the center to symbolize the foundation of the Church; she is the pillar/axis that links earth with heaven, whereas Christ sits enthroned upon billowing clouds flanked by angels. On earth, the figures are set in a picturesque verdant landscape inspired by the Mount of Olives. Size: 19.375" L x 12.375" W (49.2 cm x 31.4 cm)

The following passage from the New Testament describes the scene, "On earth, among the rocks and olive trees - which represent nature's joyous participation in the cosmic liturgy - the angels of the Resurrection reproach the agitated apostles: 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven?' (Acts I:II). Saint Romanos the Melodist/Hymnographer who flourished in the Golden Age of Byzantine hymnography adds further context with the following, "Bowing down, the disciples did obeisance to God on high, and full of praise, they let their voices ring out to the mountain, as though shouting in honor of Eleona (olive grove), since it was deemed worthy of so much." (Romanos the Melodist, 6th century CE)

Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven."
