Description:

North Pacific, Hawaii, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 18th century CE or earlier. A pair of abrading tools made of pumice stones shaped into ovoid profile, both of a similar size, that may have been used for washing or polishing. Both stones have clear signs of being worked, with a shallow groove around the periphery which may have secured a cord or handle in place. Pumice is a unique and lightweight form of glass that is produced during volcanic eruptions. The porous nature of the pumice enables it to trap gas forming bubbles that create buoyancy, and surface tension with the water enables these stones to float! Size: 2" L x 0.75" W x 3" H (5.1 cm x 1.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
