Description:

New Mexico, ca. 4th quarter of the 18th century to 1st quarter 19th century. Early "Trabuco" - a form of the famous blunderbuss. Short barrel with slightly flared muzzle and used as a shotgun rather than single projectile weapon. Converted in its early years from flintlock to percussion type firing. Added brass sight at end of barrel, stock decorated with polished nail-heads, all of the screws holding the mechanism in place are obviously hand-made and original to the piece. On the left side just forward of the trigger is an attached metal flange so the gun could be carried in the waistband of the troussers for quick and easy access. This gun was found in new Mexico and was supposedly traded by the Spanish to the local Indians. No markings on any of the surfaces that we can see. Size: 27" L (68.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-J. H. Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico
